Jennifer Lawrence admits she doesn't understand the film she starred in, even though she slept with the director

“I slept with the director, so I had the CliffNotes”

Jennifer Lawrence has admitted that she barely understood the film in which she starred, even though she knew the director very well.

Lawrence is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. In addition to appearing in blockbuster franchises such as The Hunger Games and X-Men, Lawrence has also received critical acclaim for her performances and won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.

In 2017, the 33-year-old appeared in “Mother!”, a horror film about a nameless mother whose house is taken over by strangers.

Lawrence played the mother in question and the film featured an A-list cast including Javier Bardem, Domhnall Gleeson, Michelle Wiig and Brian Gleeson.

Although the film seemed to please critics—it received a fairly decent 68 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes—many viewers were unimpressed.

The main complaint about “Mother!” was how confusing it was, and even Lawrence admitted she wasn’t entirely sure about the plot.

And this despite the fact that she was sleeping with the film's director, Darren Aronofsky, at the time.

At a performance on See what's happening livethe actor was asked by presenter Andy Cohen: “On a scale of one to completely confused, how well did you understand your film? Mother!?”

After bursting into laughter, she replied in her usual honest manner, “I'll be honest. Well, I slept with the director, so I had the CliffNotes. So, five. Or four?”

Aronofsky himself has openly stated that he wants “Mother!” to be difficult for moviegoers to endure, saying he wanted to “make a punk film and go at the audience.”

Lawrence and Aronofsky met while filming “Mother!” but ended their relationship two months after the film’s release.

She has previously spoken about how working on the same project as Aronofsky put a strain on both of them.

In an interview with Adam Sandler, she said: “Usually I promote a film, ask people to see it, and then the matter is out of my hands.

“Normally I just let it go. Going out with the director was different. We were on the [press] After doing the tour together, I came back to the hotel and the last thing I wanted to talk or think about was a movie.

“He's coming back from tour and that's all he wants to talk about and I understand that.

“It's his baby. He wrote it. He conceived it. He directed it.”

She continued: “I was pulling double duty, trying to be a supportive partner while at the same time saying, ‘Please, for God’s sake, can I not Mother! for a second?'

“I finally thought to myself, 'This is not healthy. Neither of us are doing this because when I read this I get defensive.' Especially because it's my husband.”
