KC Current beats Utah and maintains its winning streak

SANDY, Utah – Elizabeth Ball, who broke the Kansas City Currents record with her 15th goal, was the deciding factor in the Kansas City Currents' 1-0 win over the Utah Royals in the expansion team's first-ever game.

Ball scored in the 58th minute on a header from Claire Hutton to give Current the lead, setting a new NWSL record for Current's most goalscorers in a season in just 11 games. Hutton, an 18-year-old midfielder, also picked up her first professional assist.

Ball came on in the 25th minute for centre-back Gabby Robinson after Robinson sustained a non-contact injury to her right knee. Ball ran to the touchline to hug Robinson after her goal.

Head coach Vlatko Andonvoski said Robinson will be evaluated once the team returns to Kansas City.

KC Current General Manager resigns after two years in office

A penalty could have been awarded to the Current after a shot from Michelle Cooper deflected off the head of a Utah defender and hit her hand, but the VAR review determined no penalty was awarded.

The game started with a weather-related delay of 40 minutes, which the Currents after a four-hour weather delay against Houston Dash Three weeks ago.

Kansas City had a lot of chances in the box early in the game, but only had 45% possession and was able to fire 24 shots (eight on goal). Utah was able to fire just four shots, of which only two were on goal.

Utah goalie Mandy Haught made some outstanding saves, collecting six, while KC's AD Franch recorded two saves.

Striker Temwa Chawinga collected nine shots while Debinha trailed her with five. Bia Zaneratto returned to the pitch for the final 20 minutes of the match after missing four games due to a foot injury.

Kansas City remains undefeated in the first eleven games of 2024.

The Current are currently 7-0-4, second in the NWSL standings (two points behind Orlando Pride), and return home after the international break to face Seattle Reign FC on Sunday, June 9 at 5 p.m.
