Birmingham-Southern College baseball goes viral amid crazy history and wild title run

The Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) baseball team may have just beaten the longest odds in sports history since the dawn of mankind. Moreover, the Birmingham, Alabama-based school's journey may have indirectly justified the early retirement of former Chicago White Sox infielder Adam LaRoche.

The Panthers reach the Division III College World Series despite the impending closure of the school on May 31st via BSC Athletics.

BSC secured its place in the World Series with a 7-6 victory over Denison University on Saturday. Panthers sports director Kyndall Waters could hardly contain his excitement when talking about Alex Andrejev and Kennington Smith III of The athlete.

“We are thrilled to celebrate a great regional win and secure a ticket to the World Series,” said Waters.

The Panthers pulled off the win despite nine of their players battling severe food poisoning, two of whom were hospitalized during the contest. Additionally, Denison was ranked second in the country and didn't face any of these challenges. Nevertheless, the Panthers prevailed.

“I am so incredibly proud of our team and coaching staff who always found the right words to support the student-athletes as they went through one adversity after another,” Waters continued. “We cannot stress enough our gratitude to the community that supported us along the way and to our newfound community, the entire country, that has been with us on this final historic journey.”

The 1,300-student liberal arts college voted to close in late March due to a lack of funding and declining enrollment. The college's fate was already decided when Alabama's treasurer rejected a $30 million loan in October.

Even though the school is going bankrupt, the baseball team is still there. How did the Panthers survive these difficult times?

It's hard not to believe that BSC's historic run is a product of fate. Pictured in the photo above is former Washington National Adam LaRoche (left) with his son Drake (right). The elder LaRoche infamously walked away from the game in 2016 after the White Sox stopped allowing the then-14-year-old Drake to come into the locker room, thus ending his career at 36, via Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report.

Now Drake is honoring his father's decision by leading the Panthers as the team's top pitcher. It would only be right if he won a title with BSC, since Adam never did that at the MLB level.

The Panthers' win went viral, and many fans online rightfully paid tribute to the team via Jomboy Media. The media outlet reposted a parent's Facebook post about the win on Instagram, prompting several users to loudly protest in the comments.

“If there is no documentary next year, we will riot,” said @3than.dutch.

“A bad Alfredo sauce isn’t going to stop us,” commented Cooper Davis, one of the players.

“I’ll put the house on the floor for you,” @cohenhearn Cooper replied.

At this point, it wouldn't be a surprise if an alien invasion couldn't stop this team from winning. Stay tuned as the Panthers begin their College World Series journey on Friday, the same day their school closes for good.
