Sources: Kings and coach Mike Brown put contract talks on hold

After negotiations for a contract extension, the Sacramento Kings and coach Mike Brown remain at odds over a potential deal and talks have been postponed, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Brown has one guaranteed season left on his original four-year contract and there are hopes of reaching an agreement that would spare him from entering the final year of his contract in the 2024-25 season, sources said.

Brown led the Kings back to the Western Conference playoffs for the first time in 18 years in 2022-23 and was named NBA Coach of the Year. Sacramento had a 48-34 record a year ago and was the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference – but ultimately lost a seven-game opening series to the Golden State Warriors.

The Kings were seeded ninth this season and beat the Warriors in the play-in tournament before being eliminated by the New Orleans Pelicans. Under Brown, the Kings have a record of 94-70 (.573) in two seasons.

Brown was named NBA Coach of the Year twice, including in 2009 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the Cavaliers, Brown was head coach twice (305-187, .620) and coached the Los Angeles Lakers for one season (42-29, .592).
