First released in cinemas in 2016, WE CONTINUE is newly available in remastered form on home video and digital. Aside from an odd reference to “the sniffles” as opposed to COVID, the film doesn't feel particularly dated, and Los Angeles residents will appreciate its geographical veracity.

The film was directed by Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland, with a screenplay by Mitton based on their shared story. WE CONTINUE introduces us to Miles Grissom (Clark Freeman) in the middle of his panicked nightmare about a car accident.

Miles is a 30-something video editor for cheap infomercials. He has phobias about basically everything: driving, heights, the outdoors, you name it. All of this is underpinned by a fear of death.

Having inherited money from his aunt's death, Miles offers $30,000 to anyone who can prove conclusively that the soul exists after death. To this end, he places a quarter-page ad in the LOS ANGELES TIMES Online and print versions (God bless him).

This quickly goes viral. It also leads to a visit from Miles' understandably worried mother Charlotte (Annette O'Toole). Charlotte doesn't believe in death and fervently hopes there is nothing after death. However, after failing to dissuade Miles, she offers to help him weed out the scammers and crazies to see if any of the people responding to his ad might be honest.

Some viewers don't want to know what direction a film is going in, while others feel they have been disappointed enough by fakes that they want some reassurances before they decide to watch. In support of the latter, we will acknowledge that WE CONTINUE is a supernatural horror film in which danger often comes from unexpected quarters. The tone is mostly naturalistic, with jump scares and suspense.

The film is often philosophical and expresses concepts in fascinating ways. Charlotte's perspective is particularly touching and gives the great O'Toole a chance to open up to us like a good friend.

As written in the script and played by Freeman, Miles conveys a quiet sense of curiosity and decency that keeps us engaged even when the character is at his most annoyingly shy. Other notable performances are provided by John Glover, Giovanna Zacarías, Jay Dunn and Laura Heisler.

Despite an obviously low budget, WE CONTINUE never looks or feels like it's holding back. It offers some novel flourishes and adds a layer of possibility that scares us about revenants.
