Montebello teenager makes headlines with proposal on campus – NBC Los Angeles

Romance is not dead – at least not for one high school student from Montebello who did everything humanly possible to make prom special for himself and his girlfriend.

Guillermo “Memo” Jimenez, 17, who will graduate from Schurr High School in a few weeks, recreated a famous serenade scene from the movie “10 Things I Hate About You” to ask out his girlfriend Ariana Galvez.

The video that captured the sweet moment shows the surprised 16-year-old being presented with long-stemmed roses while her friends sang “Can't Take My Eyes off You” along to the music of her high school band.

“I was in shock. I was paralyzed,” the eleventh-grader said of the moment she heard her friend's voice over the campus loudspeakers. “I didn't expect him to do that, and I was just happy.”

Ariana wasn't expecting such a grand gesture because she already knew she was going to prom with him, she said. But Memo had another idea.

“I didn't want to just say, 'Oh, I'm her boyfriend.' I still wanted to make it really cool,” he explained. “I just wanted to show how much she means to me, and I wanted to show how important she is to me.”

The special moment seems to have resonated with hundreds of thousands of social media users, as it received more than 680,000 likes on TikTok.

But Ariana said the “proposal” was not a one-time thing, as Memo has made romantic gestures many times before.

For example, when Memo asked Ariana if she wanted to be his girlfriend, he gave her a book with all the words highlighted that made up the sentence “Will you be my girlfriend?”

“I flipped through the pages and read everything he had done for me,” Ariana remembers. “I felt special and loved.”

Memo, who also accompanies his girlfriend to the classroom every day, said he learned from his parents to treat women with respect and love.

“I think I got that from my parents because my dad does little things for mom. He still celebrates her first kiss,” he said.
