Video forecast for Thursday afternoon

Wednesday was the fourth straight day of afternoon temperatures of 90° or higher this week, with more to come. Heat index values of just over 100° are expected for the first time this year on Monday.

Tonight: Thursday morning will begin warm and humid with mostly cloudy skies around the Capital Region. Temperatures in southern Louisiana will start in the mid to upper 70s and will drop into the low 90s for the fifth straight day this afternoon. Skies will remain mostly sunny today. A few light rain showers cannot be ruled out, especially during the morning commute, but most will stay dry until the end of the work week.

Like every other night this week, temperatures in Baton Rouge will drop to the low 70s on Thursday, accompanied by the same muggy atmosphere.

Next: As we end a very warm work week and approach the long weekend, temperatures continue to rise. A high of 93° is forecast Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday will be a degree or two warmer, and temperatures will peak at around 95° in the Capital Region on Monday. This weekend, every morning starts in the mid-70s. Along with temperatures, humidity will also gradually increase each day, peaking on Monday and leading to heat index values likely over 100° on Memorial Day. Skies will feature a mix of sun and clouds over Memorial Day weekend, with little chance of rain.

The next realistic chance of a shower or thunderstorm will be early next week as a weakening cold front approaches from the northwest. The front won't provide much relief from the heat, but a short-term drop in humidity behind the front is likely.
