Doc Rivers is targeting Sam Cassell for the Bucks' coaching staff amid the Lakers' HC buzz

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers plans to “make an aggressive push” to hire Sam Cassell as an assistant coach.

Cassell, who is in his first season with the Boston Celtics, worked under Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers.

Stein reported that the retired point guard is also a “legitimate candidate” for the Los Angeles Lakers in their coaching search.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Lakers have received permission to speak with Cassell and several other candidates who work for other teams.

For Rivers and the Bucks, the threat of Los Angeles signing Cassell could resolve itself. Stein reported that JJ Redick “should be considered the early favorite if determined to establish one” for LA

“There is already a belief brewing in coaching circles that he could potentially lose the job in the interview process, even though Redick has no coaching experience outside of youth basketball,” he added.

Even if the Lakers don't hire Cassell, it might not be that easy to poach him from Boston.

Charles Lee, the Celtics' senior assistant, left to take the job with the Charlotte Hornets. That would seemingly put Cassell in position to move up to Boston's bench. If that's the case, a move to Milwaukee would be a lateral move.

All in all, you might want to be with the Celtics right now.

Boston is just one win away from the Eastern Conference finals and will be the favorite whether it faces the Indiana Pacers or New York Knicks in the next round. The franchise is likely to remain a contender for the foreseeable future.

The Bucks are in a more difficult position. Sure, they have two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they have an aging roster that hasn't performed the way many expected this season. The firing of Adrian Griffin and the signing of Rivers mid-year made little difference, as the team had a losing record (17-19) under the latter.

Assuming that Cassell's ultimate goal is to become an NBA head coach, continuing to work under Joe Mazzulla in Boston might be a better path to get there.
