DALLAS (AP) — Kyrie Irving wowed the crowd with a crossover move that gave him just enough room to let a slanting 3-pointer fly.

Dallas Mavericks co-star Luka Doncic was pushed and fell as the shot landed in the air, and his teammates were immediately there to rush him as the shot went in as the whistle blew.

The four-point play was a pivotal moment in Friday night's 114-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, which sent the Mavericks into the second round of the playoffs with a 4-2 series victory.

Dallas beat LA for the first time in three first-round attempts in the last five seasons – and Irving improved to 13-0 in final games of his career.

“When I think about 13-0 in finals in general, I just know that you have to get to that point to be willing to let the other team give up,” said Irving, who scored 28 of his goals and 30 points in the second Halftime. “One of the most difficult tasks for a competitor is to get his opponent to give in or submit.”

The fifth-seeded Mavericks open the Western Conference semifinals Tuesday night at top-ranked Oklahoma City.

“No doubts about Kai,” Doncic said. “It’s amazing to see the kind of plays he makes.”

The Mavs added Irving at the trade deadline last year in hopes of forming an All-Star pair that would at least reach the West Finals starting in 2022.

Instead, injuries and inconsistencies prevented chemistry from developing, and Dallas missed the playoffs by unceremoniously folding late in the regular season to try to retain a draft pick.

Irving's health was a big factor in his promotion to the West's top six in the final two months of this season, when it became apparent that the play-in tournament might be the way to go.

Now the Mavs have a series win in their first postseason together for two players with a total of 13 All-Star appearances.

“I'm just impressed every night,” said PJ Washington, a new addition at this year's trade deadline and a key contributor on 3-point shooting and defense. “They are special players and make special plays every night.”

Irving was 10 of 13 from the field in the second half, starting with a layup that broke the score to 52-52 at halftime. After a three-pointer from Doncic, Irving added a three-pointer for an 8-0 run. Dallas didn't fall behind again.

Doncic was dealing with a sore knee that affected his shooting – the NBA scoring champion shot 24% from 3-point range in the series against the Clippers.

Irving didn't score early – totaling just 10 points in the first quarters of six games against LA. But he scored late.

The 28 points in the second half of the deciding game matched Irving's single-half playoff career high. And in a loss in Game 4, Irving scored all 40 of his points after the Clippers had jumped out to a 31-point lead as Dallas grabbed the lead before losing by five points.

“Just his calmness and his energy was always a positive in the locker room,” Dallas coach Jason Kidd said. “And that’s just the leadership and the trust that the guys have on the floor with him.”

Doncic finally defeated the Clippers after losing the first two playoff series of his career to Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Co. in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Now the Slovenian superstar is aiming for a postseason that at least rivals that of 2022, when Dallas beat the Phoenix on the road in Game 7 in the West semifinals before losing in five games to eventual champion Golden State in the West final.

After winning the franchise's only championship in 2011, Dallas didn't win another playoff series until they defeated Utah in the first round two years ago. Now the Mavs have won three of their last four series.

Doncic will take the three days off that Dallas receives to complete the series against the Clippers. He just doesn't expect the rest to make much of a difference with his knee.

“I don’t think it’s going to get better until I get some rest,” Doncic said. “It’s a lot of minutes.”

The Mavs hope for many more minutes.
