“Amazing how a single result can be so invigorating”

[BBC]

I bought a new house a few months ago, something of a renovation project. On Sunday morning I was undecided whether to go to the Amex Stadium because I hadn't won in six years, had only had one goal scored by a Brighton player since the start of March and Roberto de Zerbi said the players lacked motivation.

“If you don’t go to football, you can start steaming wallpaper,” my partner said to me. It was a surprisingly difficult decision. But it was Brighton versus Villa. I clearly wasn't the only Albion fan wondering whether DIY was the better option given the thousands of empty seats.

The pregame announcement that 31,596 spectators would be in attendance – just 300 short of capacity – sparked collective laughter in a stadium that was just over three-quarters full.

Anyone who wasn't there missed a real Albion goal and a real Albion win. Above all, they didn't feel the change in mood that the three points brought with them in the stands, in the dugout and on the field.

Brighton now have some momentum heading into the final three games of a campaign that threatened to go nowhere while De Zerbi's future remained uncertain.

Three more good performances will ensure Albion start the summer much better and hopefully De Zerbi will commit to leading the club in 2024/25.

It's amazing how a single result can be so invigorating. Steaming the guest room will have to wait, now Brighton has its mojo back.
