More details about the upcoming one PlayStation 5 ProThe Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been leaked. The technical specs of the PS5's heavily leaked mid-generation upgrade have been available for some time, but a new report sheds light on the more complicated details of the GPU.

It is widely speculated that a more powerful version of the PS5 will be a reality since the second half of 2023, but leaked documents from Sony's official developer portal unofficially confirmed the PS5 Pro as early as March 2024, codenamed Trinity. The leaked specs show a much more powerful GPU than the current PS5, topping out at an impressive 33.5 teraflops when using AMD's newer RDNA 3 architecture. Although the CPU sees a small 10% increase in clock speed on the same Zen 2 architecture, the documents also reveal exciting details about Sony's brand new image upscaling solution, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.

GTA 6s PS5 Pro and 60 FPS debacle explained

The PS5 Pro could boast significant improvements over the base model, but these may not be enough to run GTA 6 at 60 FPS, experts say.

Thanks to some research from Digital Foundry, new details about the PS5 Pro's GPU have been obtained. The earlier leak showed that the PS5 Pro has 30 WGP (Work Group Processors) producing 33.5 teraflops, a 227% increase over the standard PS5's 10.23 teraflops. However, Sony's estimates in the documents assume a 45% improvement for the Pro, which creates a discrepancy. The latest information clarifies this by taking into account the PS5 Pro's newer GPU architecture, which counts teraflops differently (dual-issue FP32 support).

Ray tracing is a big focus for the PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro's GPU will also have a base clock speed of 2.18GHz, which can be boosted up to 2.35GHz, an 8% improvement over the vanilla PS5. The GPU also features an improved cache structure, with the L1 cache doubled from 128KB to 256KB and the L0 cache doubled from 16KB to 32KB. These optimizations are apparently designed to maximize ray tracing performance, which is reportedly a big boost for the PS5 Pro. Finally, DirectX 12 Ultimate features like mesh shaders, hybrid MSAA, and hardware support for variable rate shading, all missing from the standard PS5, will be available on the PS5 Pro.

Given the serious nature of the leaks, one can only wonder why Sony is still keeping quiet about the PS5 Pro, but this month's rumored PlayStation Showcase could break the silence. Nonetheless, more than the significant hardware upgrade over the standard PS5, the Pro's PSSR machine learning-based reconstruction technique is a very notable technology that can be carried over to future generations of PlayStation consoles. With native 4K becoming more demanding and 8K slowly gaining ground, sophisticated image upscalers for consoles are the order of the day.
