Texas wins the baseball series but loses the final to Oklahoma State

The brooms remained in the caretaker's closet at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday.

Texas was limited to four goals on offense and closed its weekend with a 7-2 loss to No. 14 Oklahoma State. The loss prevented Texas from making its first series sweep since Cal Poly arrived in February. The Longhorns still won the series based on their 7-5 and 6-3 victories on Friday and Saturday.

Sunday's setback didn't cost UT second place in the Big 12. West Virginia also lost on Sunday, so UT, WVU and Oklahoma State are now all 15-9 in conference play.

“Not what we expected. We came here to sweep and (Oklahoma State) did a good job, they really did,” UT coach David Pierce said.

Neither team scored in the first three innings Sunday, but Oklahoma State hit two home runs in a three-run fourth frame. One of those home runs was hit by Carson Benge, who was also Oklahoma State's starting pitcher on Sunday.

On the mound, Benge allowed just two hits over a start that lasted 6 2/3 innings and a career-high 112 pitches. The third-year right-hander was retired after Jack O'Dowd hit a pinch-hit home run into the Yeti Yard section of the stadium.

O'Dowd's solo shot put UT up 5-1. When designated hitter Kimble Schuessler hit a home run two innings later, Texas was already five runs behind.

Texas had to use eight pitchers to survive a game in which there were 10 Oklahoma State hits and nine walks by the Cowboys. The loss was attributed to junior Lebarron Johnson Jr.

“You want to have confidence in the guys, but they have to be ahead in terms of points,” Pierce said. “We gave up free tickets. If we can do that, we have to keep combining until we get it.”

Texas is on pause until it travels to Orlando next weekend for a three-game series against Central Florida (29-15, 11-12). The Texas and UCF baseball teams, which joined the Big 12 this season, have never met before.
