The video shows two Connecticut hairdressers rushing out the door to prevent the child from running into traffic

Two Connecticut hairdressers who dropped everything to save a little girl from a traffic jam say they're just dads with lucky timing.

Surveillance video posted on the Instagram account of Look Sharp Barbershop owner Osvaldo Lugo and his employee Rafael Santana shows the pair running out of the East Hartford establishment after a young girl who was walking alone down the street.

Santana tells TODAY.com that he was cutting hair at the barbershop in East Hartford when he saw a small pink reflection fly by the window.

“I said, 'Yo, there's a little girl of her own,'” he says. “In the store we joke around all day to pass the hours, so I'm glad (my colleagues) believed me.”

Santana, a father of four and a baby on the way, says he's always vigilant, especially in public. “I have to keep an eye on my children.”

Santana and Lugo ran out the door and chased the girl as she headed towards a busy intersection. As Lugo's Instagram video shows, Lugo caught up with her at the crosswalk.

Lugo, a father of three, tells TODAY.com that as he ran he kept thinking to himself, “You better get her on time.”

“[As the shop and building owner]“I have a responsibility to this street corner,” he says. “When I grabbed her, she screamed for her mother. I looked around and saw her mother at a bus stop… around the corner.”

Lugo brought the little girl back to her mother, who Lugo said appeared confused and shocked but grateful. The men then returned to the barbershop while their customers waited.

East Hartford Mayor Connor Martin awarded Santana and Lugo hero certificates. And the local police department publicly praised her.

“Heroic barbers to the rescue! Today we would like to give a big shout out to the quick thinking and courageous duo Osvaldo Lugo and Rafael Santana of LookSharp Barbershop,” a police Facebook post said. “Their quick action rescued a young toddler who had escaped from his mother and was heading toward Main Street. Thanks to them, a possible tragedy was averted and the family remained together. We are incredibly grateful for these everyday heroes among us!”

Santana says he and Lugo are just dads with lucky timing.

“We did it out of love and we would do it again a million times,” Santana tells TODAY.com. “We protect and serve our community at all costs.”
