The first trailer for the prequel film “The Lion King” is released today

Mufasa: The Lion King releases its trailer today (April 29).

Good Morning America, which airs on Disney-owned ABC, announced that it will exclusively release the first trailer for the prequel today. The show airs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Eastern Time.

Following the success of the 2019 photorealistic remake, the Walt Disney Company announced a prequel film focusing on the rise of Simba's father.

The film will also be inspired by the original film's sequels and feature actual scenes with Simba and Nala's child Kiara, while Timon and Pumbaa provide comedic narration.

Underground Railroad and Old Man actor Aaron Pierre voices young Mufasa, while Elvis actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays young Scar, also known as Taka. Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen and John Kani return to provide the voices of Timon, Pumbaa and Rafiki.

It is currently unknown if James Earl Jones has returned to provide new dialogue for the older Mufasa.

In 2022, the legendary actor reportedly said he wanted to take things a little easier, particularly when it came to dubbing Darth Vader, and gave Disney permission to use AI and his library of recordings in the future.

“Mufasa” was directed by Barry Jenkins, who succeeded remake director Jon Favreau. The film serves as a reunion for Jenkins and Pierre, as Jenkins previously directed The Underground Railroad.

Disney has slowed down a bit with its live-action remakes lately, but still has Snow White slated for next year, Moana for 2026, and projects like Lilo & Stitch, Hercules, and several others in the pipeline.

Mufasa: The Lion King will be released on December 20th.
