What will Big Blue do in Round 1?

EAST RUTHERFORD — Preparations for the NFL Draft essentially began around Thanksgiving from the New York Giants' perspective, when last season was on the verge of unexpected doom.

While Big Blue picked up three wins with Tommy DeVito at the helm and another win over the Eagles in the Finals, Brian Daboll's second season as head coach ended well below expectations in Joe Schoen's second year as general manager.

A first-year playoff team that has its eyes on the No. 1 pick in the draft for much of the second year.

Now, with the draft festivities set to begin in Detroit five months later, the Giants sit at No. 6 overall and there's a strong chance that most, if not all, of the first-round drama will begin with Big Blue.

I imagine all of these players are their picks: Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze. If Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels go 1-2 as expected, the Giants are guaranteed to get one of those players. Are you staying at 6am?

Is JJ McCarthy convinced he'll be a Giant?

Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy is certainly in the mix for the Giants as they consider what to do with their first pick, currently No. 6 overall. Will Big Blue, as I predicted in my mock draft, trade up to the Patriots at No. 3 for North Carolina QB Drake Maye? That's not unrealistic if New England is willing to make a deal.

But there has been much debate about how much the Giants like McCarthy, who visited East Rutherford and worked out for the team on Easter Sunday in Ann Arbor, not to mention the long dinner the night before at a local Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

There has been speculation that the Giants don't like McCarthy that much, and yet McCarthy was asked on the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday if he had a team that he thought would be the leading candidate for him.

McCarthy spent the next 30 seconds praising the Giants, calling Daboll, “Mr. Schoen,” offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Mike Kafka and quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Shea Tierney mentioned by name. This level of praise seemed absolutely genuine. Check out the video here: Watch the McCarthy interview with Rich Eisen.
