The G5 teams are rumored to be part of a college football super league

In recent weeks, the idea of a future college football “super league” has reportedly been floated among many of the sport's top officials.

On Tuesday, Sportico's Daniel Libit reported on a pitch deck from TurnkeyZRG that included suggested departments and members for a version of the idea. In this scenario, the league would consist of eight divisions with ten teams each. One of these divisions would include ten members of the Group of Five.

These ten clubs are Boise State, James Madison, Liberty, Miami (OH), New Mexico State, Toledo, Troy, Tulane, UNLV and UTSA.

Four of the above clubs were champions of their respective conferences. Five reached their respective championship title games. UTSA finished third in the American Athletic Conference, while SMU won the AAC and then advanced to the ACC.

In this scenario, the league would have 70 permanent members, made up of members of the former Power Five conferences. A “minor league” division would consist of G5 teams that would change each year based on team performance. The top two teams would stay and the bottom eight would be relegated.

The idea is not yet fully developed and would of course need significant support from college football's key stakeholders. Still, it's something fans of the G5 should pay attention to. Because if the last few seasons of college football have taught the public anything, it's that basically anything can happen when it comes to this sport and its leadership.
