Israel-Gaza live updates: We 'defeated' Iran, Biden says

Israel demonstrated its “military superiority” over Iran on Saturday while demonstrating its partnership with military allies including the United States, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Monday.

Israel said Sunday that about 99% of missiles and drones fired by Iran were intercepted by Israel and its allies, a defense that Kirby called a “tremendous success.”

“I think it showed that Iran is not the power that it claims to be, that it doesn't have the same military superiority,” Kirby said on “Good Morning America.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to reconvene his War Cabinet on Monday, a body that met on Sunday without deciding on a response to Iran's attack. And President Joe Biden and his G7 colleagues released a statement on Sunday calling on Iran to stop its attacks.

“With its actions, Iran has taken a further step towards destabilizing the region and risks triggering an uncontrollable regional escalation,” said the statement from the G7 heads of state and government. “This must be avoided.”

The United States would not participate in an Israeli response if the country decides to strike back against Iran, U.S. defense and security officials said Sunday.

But the final decision on whether Israel strikes back rests with Netanyahu, Kirby said on Monday.

“The president also made it clear, as he always has, that we are not seeking a major war in the region and are not seeking a conflict with Iran,” he said.
