Ryan Reynolds shares Titanic birthday video for Rob McElhenney

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is no stranger to pranks and funny messages, and on Saturday he shared a Titanic-themed birthday message for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney, co-chairman of Reynolds Wrexham AFC. McElhenney's birthday is April 14, which is also the date the Titanic sank in 1912. And in the end the news wasn't just about the ship, but also about the popular romantic film and box office hit.

Dressed in his Deadpool costume, Reynolds explained: “As some of you may know, today is April 14th, the birthday of my beloved Co-Chairman Mr. Rob McElhenney. It’s also the day the Titanic sank.”

He accidentally posted it too early as he mixed up his dates, but explained that it was now April 14th in Wrexham, so close enough.

“So for his big day this year I funded an expedition to the seabed to retrieve a few bottles of Wrexham Lager, which was actually on that maiden voyage, and use them for an epic birthday toast,” he continued. “We looked and looked, and although we unfortunately didn’t find a drinkable Wrexham lager, what we found was even nicer.”

The expedition, Reynolds said, discovered … a drawing of a shirtless McElhenney wearing a heart-shaped necklace, in the style of the necklace made by Jack Dawson in the epic 1997 film by Rose Dewitt Bukater.

“Join me in celebrating the heart of our Wrexham AFC family by sending Rob all the best birthday wishes we can,” Reynolds continued. “But please don’t embarrass him by heading to Vistaprint.com/Wrexham to buy, gift and share custom items in Rob’s finery – and soft, delicate chest hair.”

“And don’t spread it all over social media,” Reynolds added. “You should also not visit the Ty Pawb Gallery in Wrexham where this picture will actually hang next to real works of art. No, just do what I am and just wish Rob a happy birthday. See you in League One.”

This last mention is thanks to McElhenney and Reynolds' Welsh football team, which they co-own and which played in England's fifth tier for years and enjoyed great success with the two celebrities' support – and their wallets. This includes moving up in the rankings and being able to play against higher quality teams thanks to winning the league.

Reynolds and McElhenney's journey alongside Wrexham was told in the Hulu documentary series Welcome to Wrexham.

This isn't the first time Reynolds has had fun celebrating McElhenney's birthday. In 2023, the actor decided to teach the rest of the world how to pronounce McElhenney's last name – via song.
