“In this industry, trying to play fortune teller before launching a campaign is just that, a game.”

The first peaches and nectarines of the season will be available from the end of this week/beginning of next week in the Spanish province of Alicante on farms such as those run by members of the Best Fruit cooperative.

“This week we will start harvesting the first peaches and the next we will continue with the nectarines,” says Álvaro Guillamón Muñoz, manager of the Abanilla-based cooperative that brings together producers from Murcia and Alicante. “Our competitive advantage lies in this particularly early fruit, which we grow in coastal areas, especially in Pilar de la Horadada and Campoamor, and which allows us to reach markets earlier.”

“In May we will continue with apricots that we grow in the Villena area and with cherries from the mountains of Alicante, which have a denomination of origin, until July. As for other types of stone fruits, we will… We plan to produce some flat peaches and platerina peaches, as well as table grapes, in collaboration with local producers, which we will start marketing in August.

“In general we expect good fruit quantities as there are no frost or hail problems. Rain, as always, will be a deciding factor, but I've learned that in this sector you have to make predictions or try to play fortune teller.” “Before a campaign starts, things can change in a matter of hours,” says Álvaro. “We will see how the market reacts to this high supply. We have to remain careful.”

“As far as citrus fruits are concerned, it has been a very difficult season, characterized above all by the import of fruits from third countries with which it is very difficult to compete, especially because we do not have a level playing field. “I hope that action will be taken.” In this regard, it is a sensitive issue with many hidden interests that are unfortunately beyond our control.”

“We're not doing too badly here at Best Fruit, but we need to keep up with the work we've done since we started this journey, strengthen our current business relationships and strive for more. The concentration of supply.” “Promoting investment groups is a factor to keep in mind. In my view, any producer who is not part of a larger organization is at risk of disappearing.”

Regarding stone fruit, “we are among the first to reach the market in our region and although companies and cooperatives in this sector have limited bargaining power due to pressure from large investor groups within the fruit sector, we can still differentiate ourselves.” extra-early fruit into something special.”

“And the best thing about it is that there is already demand for stone fruit and the prospects for operators are good. If we were already in the harvest, everything would be sold immediately and at a good price.”
